Lindsay v. The Wrecked and Abandoned Vessel R.M.S. Titanic
52 U.S.P.Q.2d 1609 (S.D.N.Y. 1999) - full text opinion
Even though you might have seen the movie, you might not remember what the Titanic looked like. In that case, you can take a computer-generated 3-dimensional tour. However, there are many other sites for you to look at. In particular, the defendant's web site contains a wealth of information and photos.
Concerned about the detrimental effects salvage operations were having on the wreckage, Congress passed the Titanic Maritime Memorial Act. To this end, the United States introduced a resolution to the United Nations to create an international multi-lateral treaty declaring the wreak as an international maritime memorial.
In June 2004, the United States signed such a treaty with the United Kingdom, Canada and France. It currently awaits ratification in the Senate before becoming effective. In the meantime, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has promulgated regulations for conducting research and/or salvaging objects from the Titanic.
