Dam Things from Denmark, a/k/a Troll Company ApS v. Russ Berrie & Company, Inc.
290 F.3d 548 (3d Cir. 2002) - full text opinion

Trolls In the 1950s, Danish carver Thomas Dam received some local notoriety for a gift he had made for his daughter: a troll carved out of rubber called the "Good Luck Troll." In America, troll dolls have experienced several passing periods of extreme popularity over the years, the first beginning during the autumn of 1963 and lasting through the end of 1965.

Dam Things is still in business today and the trolls are quite popular on eBay, so maybe there's something to the trolls after all.
