BuyCheapSoftware.com is still around, and it continues to sell Adobe products.
Around the same time this case was decided, Adobe got involved in another controversial copyright lawsuit. It asked the FBI to arrest Dmitry Sklyarov, pictured, for his involvement with a Russian company called ElcomSoft. The company made a product that would convert encrypted Adobe eBook files into an open .pdf format. Adobe claimed that this violated the DCMA's prohibition against circumventing content controls (for more on the DCMA, see the discussion of Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Reimerdes).
Sklyarov was held in the United States away from his family in Russia for six months and he became something of an internet cause célèbre. The case against him was dropped in exchange for his testimony against his former employer. However, even this was not enough for Adobe to win its case, as a jury acquitted the company of all charges.
